Pennant Walters is developing proposals for a wind farm on a site near Newbridge (Trecelyn), which will lie east of Abercarn and Newbridge, and to the west of Mynydd Maen.
It is estimated that the wind farm will generate up to 20MW of electricity, which is equivalent to providing enough power to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 13,135 homes[1].
As the proposed wind farm will generate up to 20MW of electricity, it will constitute a Development of National Significance (DNS). This means that the planning application will be submitted to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) and considered by an Inspector before a final decision is made by Welsh Ministers. More information on this process can be found here.
This website will be updated regularly to keep you informed about the proposals, where we will be seeking the views of local residents and consultees.
*Please note that the statutory consultation has closed*
During March 2023, we undertook an early engagement community consultation on the very early proposals. As part of this, we held two public exhibitions and provided an opportunity to provide feedback. We would like to thank all those who took part and provided their feedback to help shape the proposals.
Following the phase of informal consultation, we undertook statutory consultation in November and December 2023. This was completed in preparation to submit an application to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales (PEDW) as required by the DNS regulations set out in the Planning (Wales) Act 2015.
Since 10 November 2023, this website has contained all the draft documents and information that we consulted on as part of the statutory consultation, which you can find on the Project Documents tab. We held public exhibitions to provide further information about the proposals and to seek local feedback. These events took place at the following locations and dates:
Llanfach Village Hall, Twyn Road, Abercarn NP11 5LB
Thursday 30 November
2pm – 7pm
Newbridge Memo, High Street, Newbridge NP11 4FH
Friday 1 December
2pm – 7pm
Please get in touch if you have any questions about the consultation, or the events, and we will be happy to help. A community newsletter has been posted to surrounding residents with further information. A copy of this can, along with all other consultation materials, be found on the Project Documents page of this website, or via the Virtual Consultation.
We are also hosting all consultation information online at our virtual exhibition. If you were unable to make it to an event in person, all the relevant information is available via the below link.
Pennant Walters was founded in 2003 to develop renewable energy schemes as part of the Walters Group’s drive to develop sustainable, green projects on its land holdings. Walters Group is based at Hirwaun and employs 500 people across the business, many of those in South Wales.
Walters is a family company with a long history of operation across the valleys. Historically providing plant and services to the mining industry, the group now looks towards the delivery of greener energy and is bringing forward numerous new renewable energy projects across the region.
Currently, Pennant Walters operates six wind farms in South Wales, generating 127MW of energy making it Wales’ largest home-grown renewable energy developer. Pennant Walters take all sites from inception to operation, ensuring continuity for local community and stakeholders throughout the planning, construction, generation and decommissioning phases.
